Inline active-connection check, drop dbus-except branch

The except branch treated a D-Bus error as "still active" and thus kept a
possibly-dead connection selected - reintroducing the stuck behaviour this
change fixes (review by @KraPete). Inline the check via find_activated_connection,
matching the unwrapped call already used in cycle_loop.
