Making scripts bash v3 & v4 compatible (#89)

* Making scripts bash v3 & v4 compatible

To make bash v3 compatible, removed all occurrences of “;&” from the
CASE statements.

To reduce code duplicity created simple functions to parse & execute
commands.

* Bash 3 compatibility: stream line the switch case & indentation

Further stream lined switch case by adding a new function unit_test()
and then calling it from the switch to execute unit test cases.

Corrected the indentation of  exec_command* functions
