widget: guard customUpdate callback against stale list index

When items are replaced with a shorter slice mid-render, the list may
call UpdateItem with an index beyond the new bounds. Move the bounds
check to the top of the callback so neither the customUpdate fn nor
SetText receives an invalid index.
