### What kind of change does this PR introduce?
This is a step in the right direction to cleaning up duplicated code
between convert.corrections and convert._data_corrections

### Does this PR introduce a breaking change?
This should still work in all cases. Erroneous metadata additions should
be absent when using the new code.
