Replace iconv with iconv-lite (#15)

- Replace native `iconv` module with `iconv-lite` for character encoding conversion
- Remove redundant string to buffer conversions in `try_convert`
function (now returns strings directly)
- fall back to iconv if installed and a conversion fails
