Update .gitignore and remove unused files (#538)

* Update .gitignore and remove unused files

- Added Python-related entries to .gitignore to exclude common build artifacts and virtual environment files.
- Removed the `open_issues_last_1_year.json` file and `PERFORMANCE_IMPROVEMENTS.md` as they are no longer needed.
- Refactored the GlobalContext component to improve type definitions and enhance code clarity.
- Updated various components to utilize nullish coalescing for default values, improving code consistency and readability.

* Refactor timeline-control component to improve type safety

- Updated the mode prop in StandardNavButtonProps to use the TimelineMode type instead of a string, enhancing type safety and clarity in the timeline-control component.
