minor improvemens to buffer class (#124)

- add guards against memcpy'ing null pointers
- use only realloc instead of sometimes using malloc
- add function to produce debug representation (for testing)
- add literal operator to simplify comparing to expected values
- remove pointless `inline` modifiers
