Provide fallback when referencing used engines.

There continue to be user complaints about an issue occurring here
while repeated requests for a reliable reproduction are never answered.

Preferably we would not have been forced to make such changes blind. It
remains completely unclear how the alleged situation can occur and I will
note coverage is ow slightly decreased because I've literally been unable
to trigger it. As far as I can tell by just prodding the explanation is
either the module api is being violated or current code is not being run.

Relent and add some belt and braces.
