internal: refactor string manipulations

This commit refactors some old code to avoid unnecessary fmt.Sprintf calls
and/or remove unnecessary regular expression usage. Older Skeema code tends
to use inefficient string manipulations, and this commit is part of an
ongoing effort to clean up such code over time. Several additional similar
commits are likely later this year.

No changes in behavior.
