Fix datetime type detection

Fixes datetime type detection when the argument is a `xarray.DataArray`
or numpy array. Simply checking the instance class would not catch those
cases with datetime type. Instead, now checks for the dtype, ignoring it
if the variable doesn't have it, and then proceeding to the class check.
