Refactor messages to separate "time" and "timestamp" better (#121)

* Separate time spans from timestamps

* Remove undocumented default method behavior

* Update the applications to the new API

A few were very broken!

* Add an example conda environment

* Update the documentation

* Make default values floats (nan) not None

* Do not store None when task fails
