fixed a bug that crashed `download_pieces`

the bug was due to buf ptr advancement before reading the whole packet.
that way the read could be cancelled, but the pointer would stay
advanced. Gotta be careful there and maybe rewrite this to use streams
to avoid this kind of problem altogether.
