Support dotted hints

One can specify the path to a key using dotted notation.
This is helpful if the hint is 'name', but there are two names, one at
thing.name and one at thing.something.name. The hint 'name' would get
thing.name, while 'thing.something.name' would get thing.something.name.

Additionally, 'wildcards' can be used within these paths. To get
'thing.something.name', one could simply use '_._.name'. This would of
course depend on there not being a 'thing.somethingelse.name'!
