Bug fix, new tests, portable set thread name functionality (#258)

* Fixed issue #259
* New test: write log file, then read back in to confirm the complete
message was written
* New test: set thread name, check thread name, clear thread name, check
for thread ID
* Minor tweaks to quiet linter 'code smell' warnings (mostly adding
const to pointer parameters)
* Change max message length to 4KiB (4096 bytes)
