Fix auto conversion to enums

`Enum.IsDefined` throws an `ArgumentException` if the value is of different
enum type or different underlying integral type.
`Enum.IsDefined` allows strings, but `Enum.ToObject` does _not_ and throws an
`ArgumentException`.
