Wrap localStorage calls in async AppStorage class

This commit prepares the way for the migration to IndexedDB by making
all localStorage calls effectively asynchronous. This was accomplished
by wrapping the localStorage calls in a promise-based AppStorage API,
and calling to that instead in the rest of the application.
