Fix potential bug on utils module

Fix potential bug on utils module

Why:

The traverse_recursive function of utils module uses a list as default
argument, this is a potential bug.

This change addresses the need by:

Set default value of path dummy argument to None and check its value
inside the function.

Side effects:
