Introduce configuration script

A configuration script has been introduced to dynamically generate the
Makefile for the target platform, thereby no longer requiring gmake for
FreeBSD. The generated Makefile now also has targets for installation
and uninstallation. The existing Makefile has been removed from version
control since it is no longer required, and the CI scripts have been
updated accordingly.

This commit has been rebased from the issue/80/config-script branch.
