Linting and test cleanup

* export simulation framework in example build (🌟), so tests can be copy/pasted almost verbatim from `spec/testfile.js` into the browser console in a running example.
* LARGE refactoring to make test setup easier and more consistent
* update deps
* cull unused simulated event code
* update linter, and fix a ton of lint errors
* fix unecessary DOM update during handleToggle, which caused a memory leak warning
