Accept non-string objects in read()

When there are one or more non-string objects in the arguments, they
are considered as sequences, and the return value has a list structure
reflecting the arguments. For example,
  fl.read(['F1'])              -->  ['a1']
  fl.read(['F1', 'F2'])        -->  ['a1', 'a2']
  fl.read('F1', ['F2', 'F3'])  -->  ['a1', ['a2', 'a3']]
