Asyncio lock helpers (#641)

* Add async function synchronization

These synchronization primitives allow easily applying asyncio.Lock
instances to functions with a decorator. This is needed in several
places where functions/methods should not be called concurrently.

* Rename async_functions to asyncio_extensions

* Use synchronizedmethod in protocol

* Replace unneeded calls to gather_without_exceptions with write_message
