where tasks inadvertently move to canceled on invalidation, preventing them from
restarting.

I found this pretty tricky to reason through, which probably means we should consider
rewriting the task state machine into a healthier spot where the logic isn&#39;t so strewn.

This transition is running to canceled, distinguished from running to invalid.
