fixed bug related to threading.local and mutables (#140)

This commit fixes #139. `threading.local()` can only store immutable
objects, while mutable objects are silently discarded. See
http://slinkp.com/python-thread-locals-20171201.html for more details.

This bug went unnoticed since there was no test that tested the behavior
of the contracts in a multi-threaded setting.
