Replace compare(a, b) with !diff(a, b).length

This provides more flexibility via custom diff provided as optional
argument to createPatch(...) entry point, but potentially causes a
performance regression due to less lazy comparisons.

Partially addresses issue #15, specifically using a custom diff to
handle Date instances properly.
