fixed issue with os specific helpers not being added

also version bump for release

closes #1

the issue was that class methods follow the mro so any static method
that is called in that way will always be the mroed version

this is why I had to add the call to set, because the same static
method was being called repeatedly

with this change it is now possible to use the path version of the
helpers directly as expected/desired in a way that makes the
underlying implementation opaque to the user, also as desired
