refactor `getX` and friends (#67)

They were using a single element Array where a Ref is more appropriate. 
A quick test unexpectedly showed no performance gain however. This also 
removes `getX!`, since there is no benefit in having a mutating version 
of a function that grabs a scalar.

Also removes a bit of commented code, that is implemented already in 
another file.
