Fix the Travis MacOS builds (update XCode to version 9.4 and use matplotlib 'Agg' backend) (#113)

* Use default XCode version with maxos travis jobs

* Pin Travis to osx_image xcode9.4

* Drop Python 2.7

* Drop Python compatibility code

* Remove Python compatibility module references

* Drop tests of Python compatibility module

* Change `unicode` to `str`

There is no `unicode` in Python 3. Only `str`, which means the same
thing.

* Allow travis to build on any branch

* Set matplotlib backend with environement variable in the tests instead

* Try removing conda defaults channel from travis dpl env
