first pass at transitive parents

If remove_children = False and transitive_parents = True:
  when deleting a node, its parents will be given to its children

Current code is pretty ugly (there is a gnarly if statement), but exposed several bugs in the remove_children code. Both the code and the tests should be refactored to be more efficient
