compose box: Give `state.topic` its default value immediately.

We keep this logic in `handleMessageFocus` too, for the case where the
user deletes the topic and then moves focus elsewhere... but by far
the main point of the `lastMessageTopic` logic is for the first time.
So, make it explicit there.
