reuse record buffers

Reuse buffers by reslicing them to empty instead of setting them
to nil. Setting a slice to nil, then appending one item at a time to
it, requires a fairly large number of reallocations and copies
before the slice gets up to its full size (typically batchSize, or
an average of batchSize divided by the number of shards the worker
is handling, or something in that range). Reusing the slices
avoids these allocations, dramatically reducing GC overhead.
