ui: only access UserPrefs through logic

Despite our architecture design saying that the ui layer can only access
model information through the logic layer, code in the ui layer
currently accesses UserPrefs, a model component, directly.

Fix this by making the ui layer access UserPrefs information through the
logic layer, so that our code is consistent with our architecture
design.
