Improved performance slightly (details below)

- Text layout is now only done once during the layout step.
  Previously, the layout step and the rendering step did the same
  text layouting as duplicated work
- push_rect() is not called if there is no background and no hit
  test. If the background doesn't exist, then then it's as if the
  rectangle didn't even exist.
