fix git-rm compatibility with 1.7.2

Previously, we would get the error:

    fatal: '/.../workdir' is outside repository

when trying to run 'git rm $git_dir'.

It seems like git always treats "." as the root of the repository, or
perhaps Git::Repository is doing things for me. Whichever it is, this
works to fix git 1.7.2, our new minimum version.
