Navigation: Fix selection of update element config

The callback received the selection of the links in the items when
updating after changing the current item, whereas it receives the
(parent) link item selection for updates to the items themselves.
Streamline this to be more versatile in altering the parent item
(similar to element removal), update the test and document the specifics
in the README.
