This change makes some tweaks to the `getSnapshot` feature after code
review:

  - pass `type` around as just the URI, and resolve to the full object
    client-side
  - small tweak to variable declaration logic in `Backend._getSnapshot`
  - prevent memory leak of snapshot requests
  - update response for `-1` version fetch
