test global destruction all in one process

Running sub-processes properly while maintaining library paths and
quoting things properly is added complexity we can avoid by just testing
global destruction entirely in one process.

Test::More needs to be prevented from doing its checks in END, since GD
happens after that.  Instead, we handle the exit status manually.
