TESTS & DOCS: fixes to Travis-ci for system python

It turns out that the problem was the new pip 10.0.x has stopped removing packages installed by distutils and that was meaning that pip install --upgrade no longer works for us. Fixing pip version to be 9.0.x solved the issue for now


* TESTS & DOCS: try adding pip install requests[security] early

Currently getting SSL errors with travis under the system python
installation.

Also cleared up formatting error in docs for anaconda installation
