Rework settings implementation

- Aggregate currently used system properties in an enum, which allows to have a central
  place for managing supported properties (also as a reference for end-users) and to
  prevent typos in future code. The getProperty() methods have been reworked to only
  accept keys from this new enum.
- Added a test for correctly parsing file and system properties
