mypy may be checking both sides, or LHS

Issues:  mypy notices the str = bool operation and fails

This occurred when the right hand side type, (bool in this case) was
annotated with "  # type: bool".   I suspect only "ignore" (in place of bool)
will work, because I expect mypy to care about both sides of the assignment
statement.
