Commit Message

Fix node internals to avoid losing track of subprocesses (#336)

This cleans up the node internals to make it more robust at tracking subprocesses so that it will not lose track and potentially leave orphan processes around after the node exits. Also adds basic tests of node functionality so that we can continue to refactor the internals with more confidence that we haven't broken anything.
