started to add fetching preferences from session - not ready to merge (#1604)

* started to add fetching preferences from session

* cleaned up and re-rodered a bit of the session data

* always checks the session before the databae

* things are being set within session before the database

* saving only at appropriate times now

* updated to save user preferences in a much gentler manner

* ignoring problem when we cant get the session preference, since we dont always know which thread
