Adjustments to variant case matching.

Instead of forcing variant names to be uppercase, we now check for an
existing variant in a case insensitive manner. If there's a match, we
ignore the user entered case in favor of the existing variant. If there
isn't a match however, we preserve the user-entered case.

Closes #308
