our $VERSION = '1.83.0';
I would use x.y.z kind of versioning
x - major release
y - minor release
z - build number
http://semver.org/

Given a version number MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH, increment the:

    MAJOR version when you make incompatible API changes,
    MINOR version when you add functionality in a backwards-compatible manner, and
    PATCH version when you make backwards-compatible bug fixes.

Additional labels for pre-release and build metadata are available as extensions to the MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH format.


	

I use this rule for my applications:

x.y.z

Where:

    x = main version number, 1-~.
    y = feature number, 0-9. Increase this number if the change contains new features with or without bug fixes.
    z = hotfix number, 0-~. Increase this number if the change only contains bug fixes.
