fix(api): throw an error instead of just logging a warning when adding a duplicate listenFor handler

To be honeset, there's no real good reason that adding multiple listenFor handlers shouldn't be allowed. In a future version, I want to re-write this to just use an EventEmitter and accept as many handlers as the user wants to add.
