variant: make cpe text optional

We were getting HTTP 403 errors in stage with our system account, and we
suspect this is because we're always trying to set the CPE text for a
variant every time we create or edit it.

Make the "cpe" parameter optional, and if it is "null" (the default),
do not send a cpe value to the ET server.
