Introduce explicit compiled unit resolutions

This kinda goes back to my original idea for 0.17 where you specify compiled units or there's a "smart" default. This tries to offer a decent balance of trying to resolve the context that is probably most useful to you without resolving everything, which can be a lot slower with not always a lot of benefit
